A New Solution to the Common Ear Infection

A New Solution to the Common Ear Infection

Anyone who’s a parent knows how serious an ear infection can be. They can be extremely painful and if not treated they can cause permanent hearing loss. Since 10 million new cases occur every year, an ear infection is the most common type of ailment affecting children today. Ear infections currently account for more than 35 percent of all pediatrician visits. They are so common in children because a child’s Eustachian tubes are more parallel than an adult’s causing them to be more susceptible to ear infections. In addition to experiencing pain, a child may also deal with fever and irritability during the illness.

A growing concern among parents is the methods used to treat ear infections. The most popular method is the use of antibiotics. Antibiotics can sometimes prove ineffective in ear infection treatment and extensive use of them can cause drug-resistant bacteria which will stand up to any drug. As with most prescription drugs, the patient runs the risk of suffering from side effects such as diarrhea, vomiting, and rash.

Another method commonly used to treat ear infections that also causes concern is surgery. In fact, frequent ear infections are one of the most frequent reasons for a child under the age of 2 to have surgery. The type of surgery performed to treat ear infections involves placing a tube inside the eardrum to prevent fluid buildup and assist with drainage. Another risk factor, in addition to the anesthesia required, is that the surgery has to be repeated almost 20 to 30 percent of the time. There is also the possibility of scarring the eardrum.

Given the dangers and uncertainty involved with these standard treatments, many parents are seeking alternative measures. One of the most popular choices in recent years is the use of chiropractic care as treatment. In many cases this has proven to be an effective method. Chiropractic care will activate drainage of the ear in children. This keeps fluid in the ear from building up and prevents further infections. This allows the body to heal and recover more quickly.

Some studies have shown that nearly 80 percent of the children treated with a series of chiropractic adjustments were free of ear infections for at least six months following the start of their treatments. As there is a low risk of side effects for chiropractic adjustments in children, treating ear infections in this manner becomes a viable option for those parents looking for a safer treatment.
