Distracted Walking: Slip and Fall Accidents

Distracted Walking: Slip and Fall Accidents

Our practice has seen a fairly marked increase in the number of slip and fall accidents in the past few years. One of the main reasons for this is something we like to refer to as “distracted walking”. Just as with distracted driving, the individual goes along looking down at their phone instead of where they’re going. This can easily result in a nasty accident.

With so many people nowadays always looking down at their phones, it’s no wonder that doctors are seeing an increase in the number of slip and fall accidents. As long as the way is clear, everything’s fine. But if there is an obstacle in the path of the walker or a wet spot on the walkway, it’s easy to loose your balance and fall down. Generally speaking, when we fall we often try to catch ourselves with our hands or arms. This can cause scratches and scrapes; even a broken wrist. Though most of us are quick to see a doctor for injuries like this, we often just ignore our back and neck injuries.

Any time you fall down, it causes a jarring jolt to your spinal column and this can result in the spine moving out of alignment. As the days go by and this misalignment continues, you may begin to suffer with headaches and back aches. Most of us will quickly schedule an appointment with our chiropractor and massage therapist. Though you can take over-the-counter pain medications for your discomfort, the only true and real cure is to put the spine back in alignment. Since the muscles can get sore from being out of alignment for a time, an excellent deep tissue massage can bring almost instant relief as well.

The road to relief begins with a gentle chiropractic adjustment. If your condition has gone untreated for a period of time, then you may require several adjustments to really feel good again. As noted above, a good massage can really aid in your treatment and help you get on the road to recovery. Usually, the sooner you get in to see your chiropractor after a slip and fall accident, the easier it is to treat. With the back and spine, regular maintenance is important, but after any accident, a spinal adjustment is almost always recommended.

Other therapies that can help you feel better faster include trigger point therapy and Electric Muscle Stimulator (EMS) Therapy. Safe driving and safe walking are important but accidents do happen. Always try to maintain good visibility so you can see where you’re going.

The staff at Atlanta Spine Center are available when you need them. Just call us and we’ll try to see you as soon as possible and recommend the treatments that will help you feel better faster. We love our patients and strive to help them stay healthy.
