Technology Becoming a Serious Chiropractic Problem

Technology Becoming a Serious Chiropractic Problem

Chiropractors across the nation have been seeing more and more patients with neck injury due to a unique reason – technology. Known as “text neck,” this type of neck injury is commonly seen in teenagers, but effects just as many adults.

What is the Cause?

Though the name text neck suggests neck injury is only due to texting, it actually is due to any relationship with mobile devices such as reading, Internet surfing and social media. Extended periods of bending and tilting the neck to stare down into a mobile device creates an excessive strain on the cervical (neck) spine. Typically, chiropractors describe their patients as being hunched over while spending time with their mobile devices, whether it’s just their neck or entire back.

What is the Damage?

The head alone weighs an average of 10 to 12 pounds while in an upright position, but when tilted forward the weight increases causing strain on the cervical spine – which is very delicate. The cervical spine is the part of the body that contains the spinal cord and is responsible for sending messages from the brain to control the rest of the body. Damage to it can cause upper and lower back pain, chronic headaches, shoulder pain and ultimately spinal deterioration.

How Can Text Neck be Prevented?

  • Take constant breaks from staring down at mobile devices
  • Keep mobile device at eye level as much as possible
  • Do daily neck stretches to help strengthen neck and back muscles
