Therapeutic Stretching and Exercise to Relive Back Pain

Therapeutic Stretching and Exercise to Relive Back Pain

One amazing therapy for back pain that many are not aware of is therapeutic stretching and exercise. You can find multiple low impact exercises and stretches online or ask Dr. Vargas next time you visit Atlanta Spine Center. If you can find about a dozen of these that work well for you and get on a regular schedule of doing them each day, you’ll find yourself with far less back pain. These also work well for those who wake up stiff each morning. This can be the simple result of sleeping on a poor mattress.

Stretching is actually very therapeutic for your whole body and that’s because our muscles are made to be stretched. When we sit inactive for long periods of time, we can get quite a bit of soreness and stiffness. Try getting up at least once per hour whether at home or at work and doing a few stretches. This will only take a couple of minutes and you’ll find that you have more energy and feel better after a long days work.

Stretching is very simple and can be done almost anywhere. Try standing on the floor with legs spread slightly apart, then raise your left arm straight above your head as if trying to touch the ceiling. Hold that stretch for about 10 seconds and then perform the same movement on your right arm. Do about eight of these. Next bend over and try to touch the floor with your fingertips. You should feel your low back stretching along with the backs of your legs. Try to hold this position for at least five or six seconds. Do about eight or 10 of these. The next stretch is for your waist and sides. Stand flat-footed with legs spread slightly apart and keep your lower body straight while turning the upper body first to the left and then to the right. Try to complete about 10 of these.

As you get comfortable with these simple stretches and exercises, add new ones each week to your regimen. The trick to success is getting in the habit of doing these several times each day. For instance, the three stretches listed above will only take about five minutes. That makes it easy to do them in the morning, on your lunch break and in the evening. You’ll soon begin to notice much better mobility and fewer aches and pains.
